Open House at the Nature School Mon 8 June, 13–15
What is a nature school and what happens there?
The Tampere Nature School (Environmental Educator of the Year 2025) has supported environmental education and learning in nature‑based learning environments for nearly a quarter of a century, within early childhood education and basic education. A classroom without walls welcomes curious and enthusiastic participants, and the indoor classroom also provides an excellent space for inquiry‑based learning. Come to learn, discover, and take part!
Arrival:
Environmental educator Jenni Skaffari will welcome visitors at Terälahti School, in the nature school’s indoor facilities at 12 pm (Niemikyläntie 14). If you arrive later, you will find instructions at the door.

Meadow Excursion in the Kalevankangas Area Tue 9 June, 19-21
During the excursion we will explore a dry and valuable meadow that is home to, among other species, the critically endangered moth Athetis gluteosa. We will learn what makes meadows valuable habitats, how to identify biodiverse meadows, and how everyone can help revive meadow ecosystems.
The excursion is led by environmental scientist (MSc) Martti Rajamäki, who wrote his master’s thesis on meadows. Feel free to bring snacks and a water bottle. Insect binoculars and magnifying glasses are also useful. We will walk on open meadow terrain with uneven, sandy ground.
Meeting point: 7.00 pm at Iidesaukio.

Life in the Urban Stream – Trout Returning to the City Wed 10 June, 9.30–11.30
Over time, humans have harnessed streams and rivers for their own use, often at the expense of natural river ecosystems. As a result, many stream species have declined, and the brown trout is classified as critically endangered in southern Finland. In Vuohenoja, Tampere, development has moved in the opposite direction through long‑term restoration efforts. Last year, signs emerged that this work has begun to bear fruit.
This is not just about trout. Restoration and care of running waters enhance biodiversity in places whose natural values may have been forgotten over decades. When conditions allow trout to reproduce naturally in urban streams, the habitat also becomes suitable for many other species.
On Wednesday morning, you will have a unique opportunity to hear Sami Ojala and Pyry Rinkinen discuss the history of running waters and their restoration, and to learn about the work of the KVVY Association. Even an ordinary‑looking stream can be full of surprises!
