The ULOS-UT-OUT event series also features a whole host of participants from other species—from plants to insects, reptiles, birds, and beyond! During the Ulos-Ut-Out event, we challenge all human participants to observe and report other species to the participant list—after all, it’s wonderful to see who’s there!

You can record non-human species during the event days using the iNaturalist species identification app. Adding an observation with the app takes about a minute. During that minute, we promise you the well-being benefits of time spent in nature, as well as a growing understanding of our habitats and our multi-species companions. Perhaps the event days will also bring new non-human acquaintances…

By using the iNaturalist app, you’re also participating in citizen science and observing the biodiversity of our habitats. And of course, you can also get ideas on how to inspire your own students to explore the local nature.

To get started with species observation right away, do the following before the event:

Download the iNaturalist app to your phone from the app store (allow location access and data sharing for the app to work!)

Register for the app and familiarize yourself with it by making your first nature observation.

Join the event’s shared Project via the app, so your observations will also be saved to the shared collection: https://inaturalist.laji.fi/projects/ulos-ut-out-2026

The project is open from July 8–12, 2026, during which time the observations collected will appear in the project’s observations.

You can start making observations as soon as you arrive in Tampere. You can continue making observations within the framework of the ULOS-UT-OUT event for the day following the event as well; so if you stay to enjoy Tampere’s local nature for a bit longer, keep those observations coming.

You can find more information about the app and comprehensive instructions here: https://inaturalist.laji.fi/ and https://mappa.fi/teemareput/inaturalist/

Seek by iNaturalist

If you’re looking for an easier way to spot our multi-species friends, you can also download the Seek by iNaturalist app to your phone and link it to your iNaturalist account. In this case, species identification is done using the Seek app, and after identification, the observation is shared with iNaturalist at the touch of a button. Using the Seek app is a bit simpler than iNaturalist, and it speeds up the process of making an observation.

We are not alone here, and the richness of our habitats lies in their biodiversity. Welcome to join us in doing citizen science and collecting data like crazy about our event environment! We hope to gather evidence from the multi-species city of Tampere during the event days that is worth sharing even further.

The species identification challenge was launched by Ulos-Ut-Out, the LYKE network, Meijän polku, and the lähiLUMO project in honor of the Year of Nature 2026.

Lunches and picnic snacks

The participation fee includes the following meals:

Tuesday: Lunch, coffee and picnic snacks

Wednesday: Lunch, coffee and picnic snacks, and a light dinner

Thursday: Lunch, coffee and picnic snacks

All food is vegan.

For meals, you will need your own tableware: a washable and durable plate, mug, and utensils, as well as a thermos mug or small thermos bottle. It is recommended to pack your tableware in a cloth bag, for example, which makes them easy to carry and allows them to dry. We will provide a washing station where you can wash your own dishes. There is a lot going on at the event, so it’s a good idea to carry your tableware with you in a backpack so they’re always available when you need them.

Meals will be served as a picnic: you’ll get your food on a plate at the school and eat it in the park (or on the school steps). Be sure to bring a seat pad or even a picnic blanket! Afternoon coffee is provided to go, and you can take a break whenever it fits your schedule. After Wednesday’s evening program, a light evening meal will be provided to take to the park. Don’t forget a water bottle!

You can find the meal schedule on the program page and in the event app.

Evening café and camp atmosphere

In the evenings, the event area features an evening café where scouts create a fun atmosphere and camp activities! The café is located in Kaleva Church. Stop by with friends to enjoy the great atmosphere and tasty café treats during the event. We’ll have both savory and sweet options—for both small and big appetites! Grab a seat at a café table, by the campfire, or on a picnic blanket for a summer evening!

Organizer: Pirkanmaa Ornithological Society

Life in the Urban Stream – Trout Returning to the City Wed 10 June, 9.30–11.30

Over time, humans have harnessed streams and rivers for their own use, often at the expense of natural river ecosystems. As a result, many stream species have declined, and the brown trout is classified as critically endangered in southern Finland. In Vuohenoja, Tampere, development has moved in the opposite direction through long‑term restoration efforts. Last year, signs emerged that this work has begun to bear fruit.

This is not just about trout. Restoration and care of running waters enhance biodiversity in places whose natural values may have been forgotten over decades. When conditions allow trout to reproduce naturally in urban streams, the habitat also becomes suitable for many other species.

On Wednesday morning, you will have a unique opportunity to hear Sami Ojala and Pyry Rinkinen discuss the history of running waters and their restoration, and to learn about the work of the KVVY Association. Even an ordinary‑looking stream can be full of surprises!

Organizer: KVVY – Kokemäenjoki River Basin Water Protection Association

Outdoor Skills and Archery in Sorsapuisto Wed 10 June, 9–18

Organizer: Metsähallitus (Finnish Forest Administration)

THURSDAY 11 June 2026

Ulkona.Perillä. Tour in Kaupinoja, Tampere Thu 11 June, 15–20

The free and open Ulkona.Perillä. tour arrives in Tampere. No registration or previous experience is required. Drop by briefly or stay longer to try multiple activities. Come and find your own way of being Ulkona.Perillä.!

Held by Lake Näsijärvi in Kaupinoja, the event is part of a new low‑threshold outdoor tour. In cooperation with Partioaitta, Suomen Latu offers guided and self‑guided activities, inspiring talks, equipment demonstrations, introductions to local actors, and the opportunity to meet experts. Discover gravel cycling, find new perspectives on walking, get inspired by hiking, or experience the freedom of open‑water swimming!
Read more on Suomen Latu’s website.

Environment and Facilities

A map of the venue and surrounding area will be published later.

Sammon koulu (school)

Route to the main entrance

Two accessible parking spaces are located outdoors within 10 metres of the entrance. Parking space width is at least 3.6 m. A drop‑off point for transport services is located close to the entrance (max. 5 m). The route to the entrance is level, sufficiently wide, and well‑lit.

Main entrance

The entrance is clearly marked and well lit, with a canopy above. Doors are clearly visible, and glass doors have contrast markings. There is sufficient free space outside the door for wheelchair access. Entry requires use of an intercom, after which the door opens automatically.

Note: The entrance to the C wing is most commonly used during the event, but the main entrance can also be used if needed.

Indoor facilities

The venue has two floors. An accessible toilet is located near the main lobby, next to the caretaker’s information desk. There is an elevator suitable for wheelchairs, operated with an access key. Floor numbers are tactile, and the exit‑level button is distinguishable.
(Minimum dimensions of the accessible elevator: width 1.1 m, depth 1.4 m.)

Interior doors are clearly marked, and glass doors have contrast markings. Another accessible toilet is located on floor 1.

All school toilets are gender‑neutral. In addition, one changing room used for accommodation is gender‑neutral.

Catering and Accommodation

Meals are served in the school cafeteria (or outdoors if preferred). Participants use their own tableware, with washing facilities available in the lobby.

Each participant books their own accommodation. Nearly all of our partner accommodations offer accessible rooms. Please see our accommodation partners.

Program

A detailed description of the full program can be found on the program page.

We have compiled an accessible workshop program path (mostly in Finnish). Workshops on this path take place in flat park areas relatively close to the school. Please check that the workshops you choose are accessible – these can be found in this menu. Participants must bring their own assistant and necessary assistive devices to workshops.

Priodiversity LIFE, UUO’s main partner, provides solutions to help halt biodiversity loss. The project brings together a broad and diverse network of committed actors who, working together, have the potential to identify the most impactful and cost-effective ways to stop biodiversity loss in Finland.

Led by Parks & Wildlife Finland, the project combines broad-based cooperation, research, capacity building and concrete actions aimed at safeguarding biodiversity.

“Although Priodiversity LIFE is the largest project of its kind in Finland’s history, we cannot stop biodiversity loss on our own. Environmental educators and other education professionals are at the forefront of sharing knowledge about the importance of biodiversity and motivating people in Finland to take nature-positive action. That is why our cooperation with ULOS–UT–OUT is particularly important,” says Lead Project Manager Viliina Evokari.

In Tampere, wildness does not start in remote forests. It starts where the city frays: sun-baked road verges, rough schoolyard corners, gravel patches along the tracks. These edges heat up quickly, stay open, and hold the low, modest plants that the Small Copper—Lycaena phlaeas relies on—sorrels and other so-called “weeds” that are often the first to disappear under the mower.

Within one human summer, two generations of Small Copper can complete their life cycle. This short rhythm reminds us how quickly ecological time moves compared to human planning cycles. While the last individuals may still be seen into late autumn, the conditions needed for the next generation are shaped much earlier. A single decision to tidy everything at once—cutting all verges, smoothing the ground, removing leaf litter—can quietly reset these spaces before new life has a chance to establish.

The Small Copper itself is not fragile in the traditional sense. It is well adapted to harsh, open and human-created environments: road verges, parks, rocky areas between buildings, even former gravel pits. What threatens it most is not human presence, but over-management and uniformity. Removing nettles, for example, does not directly harm the Small Copper, but it simplifies habitats and affects many other butterfly species whose caterpillars depend on them. Diversity at ground level matters.

For Ulos–Ut–Out, the Small Copper offers a powerful metaphor. It does not require strict protection, but it does require space that is allowed to remain imperfect, varied and alive. In the same way, outdoor education does not thrive only in designated “natural” areas. It grows in the in-between spaces of cities, schools and youth work—where learning is not overly controlled, and where uncertainty, exploration and difference are tolerated.

“Wilder is better” does not mean abandoning care, but choosing not to erase complexity. A brief flash of copper at the city’s edge is not decoration; it is a signal that we have left room—for species, for learners, and for forms of outdoor learning that need space to emerge on their own terms.

In exceptional cases, the workshop can also be longer than 3 hours. The workshop can be arranged once or twice during the event (depending on the organizer’s wishes and the participants’ interest). Workshops can also include preparation.

If you want, you can in addition plan an virtual implementation of your workshop that will be presented in the autumn of 2026 at the “ULOS on IN” -event. The workshops for the “ULOS on IN” -event must operate independently (ie without guidance).
